Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along - Month 3 Instructions

Templates for month 3 are, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 33, 34, 38, 48, 16, 16R

We are making blocks, 64, 74, 34, 103, 31, 51, 45, 101.

We have supplied extra fabric this month for Fussy Cutting. As so much is cut this way I haven’t provided a cutting guide.

Week 9

Use templates 7, 16 and 16R.

Using the white/small floral fabric cut 16 x 2 3/8’’ squares.
Then cut 2 x 2 3/8’’ squares each in Pink Cherries, Yellow, Red and Green.
Use 8 white squares together with the coloured squares and construct ½ square triangles as per block 11, trim to 2’’ squares, for 32 template #7. Arrange as shown in the book and photo.

Cut the other 8 white squares on the diagonal and trim, to give you 16 template #7.
Trace and cut 4 x template #16 in Pink Cherries. Trace and cut 4 x template #16R in Red.
Arrange top half as per book. String piece together and trim units into 2’’ x 3 ½’’ rectangles.
Sew together as per book. Repeat with the other half.

Now YOU have a choice! Either sew them together as Ribbons, as in the book OR reverse the lower section and sew them as Chevrons. I like both ways but I thought I should stick to the pattern. You can choose which way that you like best!

Week 10

Use templates 4, 5, 7 and 8.

In the Yellow Roses fabric, Fussy cut a 3 ½’’ square, for template #5, then cut a 4’’ square, for 2 template #8, then cut 4 x 2’’ squares for template #4 and then, 8 x 2 3/8’’ squares, for 16 template #7.
In the Pink Spot fabric cut a 4’’ square for 2 template #8 and then cut 8 x 2 3/8’’ squares, for 16 template #7.
Sew the 4’’ squares together, as per week 3 and trim to 3 ½’’ and then the 8 x 2 3/8’’pairs, 1 yellow and 1 pink, as per week 3, and trim to 2’’ squares.
Arrange the pieces as per book and photo and sew together.

Week 11

Use templates 4, 5, 7, 8 and 12.

These 2 blocks use the floral part of the White Rose Bouquet print.
Using the White Rose Bouquet fabric, Fussy cut, on the roses, a 3 ½’’ square for template #5 and a 4’’ square , cut on the diagonal, for 2 x template #8.
Cut 8 x 2’’ squares in Red for 8 template #4.

Using the Pink floral cut 2 x 3’’ squares, cut on the diagonal, for 4 template #12. Then cut 5 x 2 3/8’’ squares and cut 2 of these on the diagonal for 4 template #7 for block #51. Save 3 for ½ square triangles.

Using the Green fabric cut 7 x 2 3/8’’ squares. Cut 4 of these on the diagonal for the 4 template #7 in block 31. Then make up with the remaining 2 Pink 3/8’’ squares, 3 of each as per week 3. Arrange as per book and photo and sew together.

Week 12

Use templates 33, 34, 38 and 48.

These 2 blocks use the White/Cherry background part of the White Rose Bouquet print.
Template #34 measures 1 5/8’’ but when I used this measurement the block 101 only came to 6 ¼’’ square, so I have cut all mine 1 ¾’’ instead and used a slightly wider seam as I sewed them together. Start by sewing the centre row of block 101, press and measure. Adjust the seams to measure 6 ½’’ and use this seam allowance for the rest of the block. Remember, if you do need to trim, keep all the lines level with the ruler, horizontal, vertical and diagonal!

Using the White/Cherry background part of the fabric, Fussy cut 2 x 1 ¾’’ squares, with cherries in the centre, for 2 template #34, 1 for each block. Then trace and Fussy cut 2 x 4 1/8’’ x 1 ¾’’ rectangles to give you 2 template #48 and 1 template #33 also with cherries. Then trace and Fussy cut 10 template #38 also on the cherry background fabric.

Using the Pink Cherry fabric cut 1 template # 33, then cut 11 template #38, then cut 4 x 1¾’’squares for template #34, then cut 4 x 2 1/8’’ squares, made into ½ square triangles, to give you 8 template # 38.
Using the Pink Floral fabric cut 1 template # 33, then cut 1 x 2 1/8’’ square and cut on the diagonal for 2 template # 38, then cut 4 x 1 ¾’’ squares for template #34 and 6 2 1/8’’’’ squares for ½ square triangles.
Cut from the Green fabric 6 x 2 1/8’’ squares and 1 template # 38.
As per week 3 make up 2 Green and Pink Cherry, 4 Green and Pink floral and 2 Pink Cherry and Pink Floral ½ square triangles using the 2 1/8’’ squares.

Sew the White and Pink Cherry template # 38s together and the Green and Pink Cherry one. Press and arrange in place. These blocks are quite complicated so go slowly. Trim as needed to make your block measure 6 ½’’ square.

Good luck everybody with these last two blocks.
Remember there are no mistakes just unique handmade works of fabric art.

Cutting Diagram

Week 5

Use templates 7 and 18.

Using template 7 measurements cut 2 x 2 3/8’’ squares in aqua paisley. Cut these on the diagonal to give you 4 template 7. Trim off the corners as on the template.
Using template 18, trace and fussy cut, 2 in white/red roses and then, 2 in pink check.

NOTE. When cutting any check fabric, trace and cut on the straight line of the check not the straight grain. Unless the checks are woven into the fabric they are printed on and are usually parallel with the selvage edge but not with the cross grain!
Using the pink check fabric cut 4 x 2 3/8’’ strips from the short end. Cross cut these into 8 x 2 3/8’’ squares.
Cut 4 x 2 3/8’’ squares in green and 4 in aqua blossom. Make all these into ½ square triangles as per week 3. Giving you 32 template 7 for block 11.
Following our photo for colour placement, lay out as in the book and sew together as described. Repeat this step with all the blocks.

Week 6

Use templates 5, 7, 9, 56, 57, 57R.

Using template 56, trace and cut 4 shapes in pink doily rose, 2 in green and 2 in aqua blossom.
Using templates 57 and 57R trace and cut 8 of each in white.
Fussy cut template 5 in pink doily rose.
Cut 4 x 3 ½’’ x 2’’ rectangles in aqua paisley for template 9.
Cut 2 x 2 3/8’’ squares in aqua paisley and white and make into ½ square triangles as per week 3. Trim these to 2’’ squares if needed, keeping the seam on the diagonal to give you 8 template 7.

Week 7

Use templates 1, 3, 25.
Using template 1 measurements fussy cut 2 x 2 ½’’ squares in white/ red rose fabric.
Then cut 4 x 1 ½’’ x 2 ½’’ rectangles, template 25, and 4 x 2 7/8’’ squares for template 3.
Using the green blossom fabric cut 4 x 2 ½’’ squares, then cut 4 x 2 7/8’’ squares, place together with the white squares and make up as per week 3 to give you 16 template 3.
Cut 4 x 1 ½’’ x 2 ½’’ rectangles in pink check.

Week 8

Use templates 9, 12, 72, 73, 95

Using the green doily rose fabric and template 72, trace and fussy cut 4 shapes, keeping the centre point of the shape on the same part of the pattern each time then, cut a 2’’ strip from the other side of the fabric. Cross cut this into 2 x 6 ½’’, rectangles, template 95, and 2 x 3 ½’’ rectangles, template 9.
Then, using the aqua blossom, cut 1 x 2 5/8’’ square, template 73, and 2 x 3’’ squares, cut on the diagonal, to make 4 template12.

Cut 1 x 3’’ square in aqua paisley and cut on the diagonal, for 2 template 12.
Trace and cut 2 x template 12 in pink check. Make up the centre square of block 109 and trim to a 3 ½’’ square, then add the borders.

That’s month 2 finished! Arrange these with month 1 blocks and enjoy!

Keep all the left over fabric scraps for when we make Block 68. It uses 36, 1 ½’’ squares and it would be so pretty to make each square a different fabric!

Happy Quilting Debby and Eve.

First Month's Blocks

Month 1 Use templates 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 14, 17, 19, 25.  If you purchased our fabric pack and book we sent you the first months templates pre printed to get you started, but all the templates are on the CD in your book.

Week 1

Use templates 4, 5, 9, 17.

Using template 4 measurements, rotary cutter and ruler.
Cut
6 x 2’’ squares in aqua
4 x 2’’ squares in yellow and
4 x 2’’squares in pink.

Using template 9, cut 2 x 3 ½’’ x 2’’ rectangles in green and
template 17, cut 2 x 5’’ x 2’’ rectangles in pink.

Following our photo for colour placement, lay all your pieces out as in the book and sew together as described.

Construct all the blocks using this method. Check that your block measures 6 ½’’ square. If it’s a bit smaller take a smaller seam allowance. If it’s a bit big increase your seam allowance. It doesn’t really matter what size your blocks are as long as they are all the same size as each other. If you trim your blocks keep the horizontal and vertical lines level with the lines on your ruler.

Week 2

Use templates 11, 19, 25.

Using the white fabric cut 6 x 1 ½’’ strips from the short side. Crosscut 4 of these into a 3 ½’’ and a 2 ½’’ rectangle. Crosscut 1 into 2 x  2 ½’’ rectangles and cut the last into 3 x 1 ½’’ squares.
This will give you 4 template 11, 6 template 25 and 3 template 19.

Using the pink fabric cut 4 x 1 ½’’ strips, crosscut these into 4 x 3 ½’’ and 4 x 2 ½’’ rectangles and cut 1 x 1 ½’’ square. Using the red fabric cut the same as the pink but cut 2 x 1 ½’’ squares.

Week 3

Use templates 1, 3.

Using the white fabric and the measurements from template 1, cut 3 x 2 ½’’ squares. Then cut 6 x 2½’’ squares in aqua. Then cut 1 x 2 ½’’ square in pink.

Using the measurement from template 3 cut 4 x 2 7/8’’ squares in white and 4 x 2 7/8’’ squares in aqua. Fold the white squares on the diagonal and press. Match with an aqua square, right sides together and stitch ¼’’ either side of this line.

Cut apart on the line and press. This will give you the 8 ½" square triangles you need for these 2 blocks.

Week 4

Use templates 1, 2, 3, 14.

Using the measurement from template 14 and the spotty green fabric cut 1 x 5’’ square and crosscut on the diagonal, then cut 1 x template 14, to give you 3 large triangles. Cut 1 x 2 7/8’’square and 3 x 2 ½’’ squares.

Using the pink fabric cut 1 x template 14. Cut 1 x 2 7/8’’ square and 2 x template 2. Remember to trace these on the right side of the fabric. Make up the ½ square triangle, as before and use in Block 35.

Fussy cut 1 x 2 ½’’ square in white and cut 1 x 2 7/8’’ square in aqua and crosscut this on the diagonal to give you 2 template 3.

Arrange the pieces for block 35 (see images below) and sew the centre and the very ends of the seam between the 2 template 14 triangles and press the seam towards the basket. To make the handle, trim the ¼’’ hem from the back of the bias strip. Tuck the ends through the openings in the seam and pin in place, ½’’ from the raw edges of the block.

Appliqué the bias strip handle in place, stretching the top edge slightly, so that it sits flat. Resew the seam, catching the handle in place trim the bias ends and press.

That’s the first month done! Don’t you just love them! We do!!!
